There are nearly 300 million registered vehicles in the United States. All of these vehicles require routine maintenance to avoid problems from arising. It’s essential to have your brakes inspected regularly, oil changed, and fluids topped off.

Sometimes, despite an owner’s best efforts, problems still arise. One of these problems is car engine knocking.

But what is knocking, and what does it mean? Continue reading to find out.

What Is Knocking?

Car engine knocking refers to an abnormal sound coming from the engine. There are several noises your vehicle may make that aren’t normal. This one specifically sounds similar to a person knocking on the door.

The knocking noise may be soft and difficult to hear, or it may be loud and obvious. The knocking sound may be fast or slow. The way your engine knocks may help mechanics diagnose what the problem is.

Low Octane Rating

All fuel has an octane rating, and all vehicles require a minimum rating. If you used fuel with an octane rating that was too low for your car, it could result in car engine knocking. It may also result in overall poor engine performance and a lower fuel economy.

The Fix

If you’ve made this mistake, you can buy an octane booster from most auto shops. This should return the vehicle to its most efficient rating. After, be sure to always use fuel at or above your vehicle manufacturer’s minimum recommended rating.

Spark Plugs

Engine knocking could mean an issue with the spark plugs. This could mean the wrong spark plugs were installed in your vehicle or that your current spark plugs are burned out. Besides engine knocking, this issue may also cause engine misfiring.

The Fix

Check your spark plugs yourself or take your vehicle to a mechanic. If this is the issue, the spark plugs may need replacement. To ensure you always install the correct spark plugs in your car, be sure to learn more by reading the manufacturer’s manual.

Rod Bearings

If you hear a knocking that sounds like it’s deep inside your engine, chances are your rod bearings are starting to wear out. This is a problem you won’t want to fix yourself.

The Fix

If you believe the issue is your rod bearings, be sure to schedule an appointment with your mechanic as soon as possible. Once a rod bearing breaks, you’ll find yourself stranded on the side of the road. When it breaks, a rod bearing can cause damage to other parts, too.
